Shred the Secrets Ending 1 Guide: the "What?" Ending

Shred the Secrets Ending 1 walkthrough: find the 4 hidden buttons in the Room 5 paper maze, grab the golden secret document and escape as the FBI arrives.

Last updated: 2026-09-13

Quick answer

Ending 1 — "What?" is the quick secret route in Shred the Secrets, and per the Roblox badge API snapshot in our badge database (checked 2026-08-18) its "What?" badge is the most common ending award in the game: a 22.9% earn rate with 376,174 players awarded. The official badge description is one line: "Complete Ending 1." The recorded chain: push through the rooms until you reach the paper-maze room (Room 5 in the current 12-room build), where the game drops the hint "Find the hidden buttons in the room to unlock the secret document." Clear every other column of the floor-to-ceiling paper, press the 4 hidden buttons glowing between the stacks, and a green side door unlocks. Grab the golden secret document inside — and the punchline lands: the FBI turns up with a cat, and the "secret" is a grocery list. That counts as an escape, and the run closes on the OVERVIEW - ENDING 1 screen. All three endings at a glance: endings hub; the post-update sister route: Ending 3 guide.

How to get Ending 1 ("What?")

  1. 1

Push through the rooms until the game drops the hint "Find the hidden buttons in the room to unlock the secret document." In the current 12-room build that is Room 5, the floor-to-ceiling paper maze — the counter at the top right should read ROOM 5/12. Our source recording plays the earlier 8-room build, where the same maze sits behind a ROOM 6/8 counter: the room number moves between versions, the maze, the hint and the four buttons do not. Floor-by-floor anchors: rooms page.

  2. 2

Gear up before the hunt. The maze room holds its own upgrades desk under the red UPGRADES sign, and crumpled paper balls carpet the floor — the recordings sweep the room while shredding, so buy your usual upgrades (Shred Amount first is the community-standard order) and work aisle by aisle.

  3. 3

Clear every other column of paper. The buttons hide between the floor-to-ceiling stacks, so the trick is not to shred everything — open sightlines down the aisles instead, exactly the sweep the walkthroughs use. The room's own counter tracks your progress out of 32 paper piles.

  4. 4

Press all 4 hidden buttons. They glow green between the darkened columns, and a run-tracker checklist counts you down from 4. Whether each button sits behind a fixed column is unverified and may vary between runs — sweep the aisles until you have pressed four, rather than memorizing one spot.

  5. 5

Enter the unlocked side area. After the fourth press, a bright green door stands open behind a pushed-aside column in the dark stretch of the room — the same green that made the buttons easy to spot.

  6. 6

Grab the golden secret document. It lies on a table under a single bulb, sparkling, with a grab prompt. In our source recording the toast fires the moment the player takes it: "Badge Awarded — @admistarstorafk has won the "What?" badge!" The find is the award.

  7. 7

Watch the reveal and take the escape. The cutscene flips the "secret document" over: it is a grocery list — pickle, cheese, milk, cat food, toilet paper — plus a cat, with the FBI arriving at the run's climax. The run then closes on the OVERVIEW - ENDING 1 screen (this recording: Escaped in 00:48:45, 4,329 total shredded paper, 214 paper clips).

What the escape pays — and what stays unverified

The reward is the "What?" badge — official description "Complete Ending 1.", 22.9% earn rate and 376,174 awarded in the API snapshot checked 2026-08-18 — plus the closing OVERVIEW - ENDING 1 screen with your escape time, shredded-paper total and paper clips (this recording: escaped in 00:48:45 with 214 paper clips; the 53-minute, 175-clip reference run in our all endings guide shows how widely that varies). Ending 1 is the fastest ending and the one most players meet first; Ending 2 takes the crowbar-basement-coffee route, and Ending 3 needs the post-update Rooms 8-12 and the Room 12 vault. What stays unverified: whether the four buttons sit behind fixed columns or shuffle between runs — the recordings do not settle it, so sweep every other column instead of memorizing spots (rooms page); whether you can skip the document grab and still finish Ending 2 in the same run (reported from the earlier 8-room build and said to be unchanged after the update, but not re-verified by us); and whether the "What?" toast always fires at the table — it is clearly visible in this recording, but that is a sample of one.

Sources & data notes

Badge stats (22.9% earn rate, 376,174 awarded) come from the Roblox badges API snapshot in our badge database, checked 2026-08-18. The primary recording for this page is Aminsツ, Ending 1 - Shred the Secrets (uploaded 2026-07-28, re-checked September 2026; every caption on this page carries its source timestamp): a full solo run dedicated to Ending 1 on the earlier 8-room build — during the button hunt the counter reads ROOM 6/8, while the current 12-room build pins the maze to Room 5 per our rooms and walkthrough pages, so treat the maze, the hint and the four buttons as the constants and the room number as version-dependent. The video carries no commentary and no caption track (verified via yt-dlp and a full local speech-recognition pass), so every fact above comes from on-screen game text and the frames themselves: the maze and column clearing at 39:56-40:36, a hidden button glowing beside a column at 40:25, the unlocked green door at 41:04, the golden document with its grab prompt at 41:16, the "Badge Awarded — @admistarstorafk has won the "What?" badge!" toast at 41:20, the grocery list at 41:32, the cat at 41:36 and the OVERVIEW - ENDING 1 screen (Escaped in 00:48:45, 4,329 total shredded paper, 214 paper clips) at 41:46. The hint text "Find the hidden buttons in the room to unlock the secret document.", the four-button count and the grocery-list contents (pickle, cheese, milk, cat food, toilet paper) cross-check against the chain documented in our all endings guide; a July 2026 all-endings run by AnyaRoblox (WbFcAbE8BO4) shows the same route but carries a burned-in channel watermark, so it was used as a fact source only, no screenshots. Still UNKNOWN: whether the four buttons sit behind fixed columns or vary per run, whether the "What?" toast fires at the grab in every run (seen once, here), and whether skipping the grab to finish Ending 2 in the same run still works on the current build (reported from the 8-room build only).
