How do you beat Room 8?

Clear the paper the same way you have all run — shred piles, vacuum scraps, keep the counter climbing — until the green side door opens. The door is the payoff of the 4 hidden buttons pressed in the button maze (the mechanics, sweep pattern and floor anchors live on [Room 5 buttons](/rooms#room-5-buttons)); in our source recording the ending followed the fourth press within moments. What is inside the Room 8 side room?

One table under a single bulb, and on it the golden "secret document". The punchline: unfolding it shows a grocery list — pickle, cheese, milk, cat food, toilet paper — while the FBI and a cat arrive in the cutscene. Taking the document is what awards the "What?" Why is the FBI in Room 8 — and can it catch you there?

Two different FBI appearances exist, and they should not be mixed up. From Room 2 onward a watcher can flash into the room with a "Look Away!" warning — staring at him is the reported capture trigger, and that mechanic is covered on the rooms and badges pages. The FBI in the Room 8 ending is different: it arrives as part of the Ending 1 cutscene, in a red-lit office, with a cat and the grocery list — scripted payoff, not a capture threat. Our recording shows no watcher encounter on the final floor at all.

Does Room 8 always end in Ending 1?

For the classic route, yes as recorded: pressing the 4 buttons and taking the document played straight into the Ending 1 cutscene and the OVERVIEW - ENDING 1 screen in every recording we checked. The branching happens earlier — ignoring the button chain and taking the basement route from Room 6 leads to Ending 2, and the post-update rooms beyond this floor lead to Ending 3. Why does my room counter show a different number than your screenshots?

Because the room numbering has moved between versions. Our source recording was uploaded on 2026-07-26, before the [ENDING 3] update took the map to 12 rooms, and its HUD counts eight rooms total with the button maze labeled ROOM 5/8; other July recordings show the same maze behind a ROOM 6/8 counter. The current [rooms order](/rooms) pins the maze to Room 5 and the payoff floor to Room 8 — so treat the chain (buttons, side room, FBI, escape) as the constant and the on-screen numbers as version-dependent.

Push through the earlier rooms — the tutorial, the FBI watcher, the filing cabinets, the fake exit — until only one floor is left; the counter at the top right tracks the room you are in. In the current room order that last floor is Room 8 (rooms reference). Version note: our source recording was made on the earlier 8-room build and its HUD counts eight rooms total, so treat the room numbers as version-dependent and the sequence as the constant.

Keep an eye on the money bar. The HUD tracks a $1,000,000 shredding target across the whole run; in this recording the final stretch of Room 8 sits at $272,459 of the million. What filling the bar actually does is not confirmed — the run escaped with it far from full, so do not grind for the million just to finish. The community guess that ties the goal to a timer stays unverified on the rooms page.
