How to Play Shred the Secrets: Beginner's Guide (Core Loop, Upgrades & Co-op)

Quick answer: how do you play Shred the Secrets?

Shred the Secrets is a co-op money grind wrapped in a horror office. The whole game is one loop:

  1. Grab documents (E) from desks and paper stacks.
  2. Feed a shredder, then crank the handle (F) to recharge its power bar — each sheet spends stored power.
  3. Grab the scraps and right-click to throw them into the recycle bin. Only recycled scraps pay cash.
  4. Fill the $1,000,000 bar to clear the room — there are 8 rooms.
  5. Spend cash on upgrades (Shred Amount first), earn Paperclips for finishing rooms, and buy classes in the lobby.

Three things every beginner should know before the first run: the tutorial pays $193 and takes under a minute; upgrades reset every room, so plan to re-buy them; and playing with friends does not reduce anyone's prize money — a full squad of four is pure upside.

The tutorial: learning the core loop

  1. 1

    Grab a document (E)

Every run starts in Room 1 of 8 with the cash bar sitting at $0 / $1,000,000. Walk up to any loose document or paper stack and press E to pick it up — the game literally points at the first one for you.

  2. 2

    Feed the shredder

Carry the document to one of the shredders on the counter and load it in. Rooms have several machines side by side, so when one is busy just use the next — later you will want all of them running at once.

  3. 3

Crank the handle to recharge (F)

Shredders run on stored power: press F to crank the handle and charge the blue power bar on the machine, and every sheet you shred spends some of that charge. When a shredder stalls, it is out of power — crank it again. The Automatic Shredder upgrade later does this for you.

    Grab the scraps

Shredded paper pops out as a crumpled scrap ball. Pick it up like any other item — your hand counter in the HUD tracks how much you are holding.

Right-click to throw it into the recycle bin

Carry the scraps to the blue recycling station and right-click to throw them in. This is the moment paper actually becomes cash — nothing pays out until scraps hit the bin.

    Collect the $193 tutorial payout

Finishing the tutorial chain pays a flat $193 and the cash bar flips to $193 / $1,000,000. That million is the real goal: fill the bar to finish the room, then do it again across all 8 rooms.

Clear a pathway to the door — not the whole room

The next objective is to clear the pathway blocking the exit. You do not need to shred every stack in the room: carve a route to the door, keep the money loop running, and move on. Full clears are for farming runs, not first runs.

After the tutorial: money, upgrades and your squad

  1. 8

    Fill your hands every trip

Your hand only holds a small stack at the start — the runs we reviewed show a 10–12 sheet cap, shown as current/max in the HUD — so never walk to a shredder half-empty. Grab a full stack, feed machines, sweep up the scraps, and only then make the bin run.

Buy upgrades at the UPGRADES station — Shred Amount first

The neon UPGRADES counter in Room 1 sells five lines: Shred Amount, Carry Amount, Automatic Shredder, Shredder Speed and Vacuum Power. Community consensus is Shred Amount first because it directly speeds up earnings; guides disagree on whether Carry Amount or Automatic Shredder should be second (community-reported). One warning: upgrades reset when you enter a new room, so budget to re-buy every room.

Pick a class in the lobby

Before creating a run, open the Classes menu in the lobby. Classes are permanent meta progression bought with Paperclips (the blue clip currency you earn from finishing rooms), each with 3 levels — Associate, for example, starts with +2 carry capacity and $500 starter money. New lobbies also let you set max players from 1 to 4.

Invite friends — prize money is not split

Use the Invite Friends button in the lobby. Adding players does not reduce anyone's prize money, friends on your list add a Friend Bonus (shown in the HUD), and a squad can split jobs — two players run shredders while two sweep scraps — so a full team of four is strictly faster than solo.

Do not stare at the FBI

Room 1 walls carry the warning: DON'T LOOK AT THE FBI. From Room 2 onward, agents flash in as jump scares, and the rule is to look away — keep staring and you get caught (which, to be fair, is exactly how you earn the It's Not What It Looks Like badge on purpose).

Common beginner mistakes

  • Staring at the FBI. When an agent flashes in, look away. Holding your gaze is how you get caught — only do it on purpose if you are hunting the It's Not What It Looks Like badge.
  • Forgetting upgrades reset per room. Walking into Room 2 with an upgraded shredder and finding Shred Amount back to one sheet surprises everyone once. Re-buy your priorities at the start of every room.
  • Spending in the wrong order. Cash spent on Vacuum Power early is cash not spent on Shred Amount. Earnings upgrades first, convenience upgrades later.
  • Clearing every stack. The objective is a pathway, not a spotless room. Full clears are a farming choice, not a requirement.
  • Running to the bin after every single scrap. Sweep up a batch, then make one trip. The bin run is the slowest part of the loop — batch it.

FAQ

What is the goal of Shred the Secrets?

Each room asks you to earn $1,000,000 by recycling shredded paper. Clear all 8 rooms and you reach the ending content — including the hidden-button and basement routes covered in our endings guide.

What do I get for finishing the tutorial?

A flat $193, which lands straight on your $0 / $1,000,000 bar. It takes under a minute and teaches the entire core loop, so there is no reason to skip it.

Which upgrade should I buy first?

Shred Amount — every major guide agrees, because shredding more per cycle directly speeds up earnings. After that, community opinion splits between Carry Amount (fewer trips) and Automatic Shredder (no more cranking). Exact per-level costs and effects are not published anywhere we could verify.

Do upgrades carry over to the next room?

No. Upgrades reset when you enter a new room — your Shred Amount drops back to a single sheet per cycle. Treat each room as a fresh economy and re-buy your priorities early.

Is it better to play solo or with friends?

With friends. Prize money is not reduced when more players join, friends add a Friend Bonus on top, and a squad can split roles (two on shredders, two sweeping scraps). Lobbies support up to 4 players.

What happens if the FBI catches you?

FBI agents appear as jump scares from Room 2 onward, and the posted rule is don't look at them — look away and you are fine. Getting caught is its own badge (It's Not What It Looks Like), so it is worth doing exactly once, on purpose.
