Shred the Secrets Upgrades Guide: Best Upgrade Order (Solo, Squad & Speedrun)

Quick answer: what should you upgrade first?

Shred Amount, always. Every guide we reviewed agrees it is the first purchase because it directly increases how much you earn per shred cycle. After that, the best order depends on how you play:

  • Solo — Shred Amount → Automatic Shredder → Shredder Speed → (optional) one point of Vacuum Power → Carry Amount whenever. If you route well, the base carry is enough.
  • Squad / money farming — Shred Amount → Carry Amount → then Vacuum Power, Shredder Speed and Automatic Shredder. Fewer trips per player keeps all four machines fed.
  • Speedrun — max Shred Amount and Carry Amount first, then max everything else before moving on. Upgrades reset when you enter a new room, so repeat the same order in all 8 rooms.

One more thing nobody should buy early: Vacuum Power. Community consensus rates it the weakest line by far.

The 5 upgrade lines, explained

Upgrades are bought with in-run cash at the UPGRADES booth, and the booth display shows each line has 5 levels. Exact prices and per-level numbers are not published anywhere — the one data point on camera is Carry Amount at $6,000 for its first level.

  1. 1

Shred Amount — always your first buy

Shred Amount increases how much material each shredder cycle processes, so every trip to the machine pays more. Every guide we reviewed puts it first, no exceptions — it directly speeds up your earnings.

  2. 2

Carry Amount — second for squads, optional solo

Carry Amount raises how many documents you haul per trip (the 12/12 counter on your HUD). Squad and speedrun guides take it second to cut down on back-and-forth runs; solo players report the base carry is usually enough if you route well.

  3. 3

Automatic Shredder — kills the crank grind

Shredders run on stored energy that you build up by hand-turning the crank, and every sheet you load spends some of it. Automatic Shredder reduces how often someone has to stop and crank — squad guides call it the third most important line.

  4. 4

Shredder Speed — faster cycles once volume is up

Shredder Speed makes each machine chew through its queue faster. It does nothing if the shredder is idle, so buy it after Shred Amount (and Carry Amount in squads) has guaranteed a steady flow of paper.

Vacuum Power — widely rated the weakest line

Vacuum Power improves the broom-style vacuum that auto-locks onto scraps and paper balls. Community-reported consensus: skip it or buy it last — throwing paper straight into the machine works fine without it.

Best upgrade order by goal

Solo (Vorzy's recommendation): Shred Amount → Automatic Shredder → Shredder Speed → one point of Vacuum Power if scraps pile up → Carry Amount last. The reasoning: alone, your bottleneck is cranking and shred cycles, not carrying.

Squad (Radex Tips' recommendation): Shred Amount → Carry Amount → Vacuum Power / Shredder Speed / Automatic Shredder, with Automatic Shredder treated as the third most important because it frees a teammate from crank duty. Split roles two-and-two: shredders and collectors.

Speedrun (Ricoko's route): max Shred Amount → max Carry Amount → max the rest → open the next room and repeat, because upgrades do not carry over between rooms.

Buy at the UPGRADES booth — and rebuy every room

Upgrades are sold at the UPGRADES booth inside each room, paid for with in-run cash. Speedrun footage shows purchases resetting when you advance, so re-prioritize Shred Amount in every new room. In this clip the booth lists Carry Amount at $6,000 for level 1 of 5 — per-level prices for the other lines are still unpublished.

Two badges pay you to upgrade

Buying any upgrade earns the Company Card badge ("Buy your first upgrade"), and community reports say maxing every upgrade line in a single run earns Exceeded Expectations. The total cash cost of a full clear is unknown — treat it as a late-run goal, not an opener.

Money route: how to hit $1,000,000 per room

The economy loop is simple: grab documents → shred them → throw the paper balls into recycling → spend cash on upgrades → clear the room. A beginner run with no upgrades manages roughly $12,000 in 9 minutes, so upgrades are what turn that into $1,000,000.

    Every room asks for $1,000,000

The bar at the top of the HUD tracks your progress toward the $1,000,000 room goal across 8 rooms. Bringing friends does not dilute the reward — the prize money stays the same, and playing with friends adds a bonus on top.

Load paper, then crank the shredder

Carry documents to a machine, place them with E, and keep the shredder charged by turning the crank with F — every sheet spends stored energy. In a squad, the standard split is two players on the shredders and two collecting paper and vacuuming.

Shredded paper comes out as paper balls

Each shredded sheet pops out as a crumpled paper ball. Grab the balls and throw them with Right Click — do not leave them on the carpet, because balls are unclaimed money.

Feed the recycling chute to get paid

Paper balls only turn into cash when they go into a recycling point — look for the wall chute or counter unit with the recycling logo. This is why Vacuum Power is considered skippable: a well-aimed throw does the same job for free.

    Bank your paperclips for classes

Paperclips drop as you shred and when you clear rooms — they are the permanent currency, kept between runs. Spend them on classes and class levels in the lobby: the shop lists Intern at 100 clips and CEO at 1,100, and higher classes start each run with bonus cash and party-wide buffs.

What about the Golden Shredder?

The Golden Shredder is real — shredding with it earns the Solid Gold badge — but the community tells two conflicting stories about how to get it, both currently unverified:

  • Story A (quest reward): find the lost phone, return it to the Sketchy Coworker, and he hands you the Golden Shredder. You then hold interact on any shredder to install it for 2x cash, six stacks at once and no cranking — and you can take it back to move it between rooms.
  • Story B (upgrade capstone): keep upgrading a shredder and it eventually turns into the solid golden shredder.

Either way, it is a bonus, not a plan: the standard upgrade order above is what carries a normal run.

FAQ

What is the best first upgrade in Shred the Secrets?

Shred Amount. It increases how much material each cycle processes, which directly speeds up your earnings — every guide we reviewed opens with it.

Is Vacuum Power worth upgrading?

Community consensus says no. The broom already auto-locks onto scraps, and throwing paper balls into the machine or the recycling chute costs nothing. Buy it last, or skip it entirely.

Do upgrades carry over to the next room?

No. Speedrun footage shows upgrades resetting on each new room, which is why speedrunners re-buy Shred Amount and Carry Amount first in all 8 rooms.

How much do upgrades cost?

Exact per-level prices are unpublished. The upgrade booth shows 5 levels per line, and one clip lists Carry Amount's first level at $6,000 — treat everything beyond that as unknown until more data surfaces.

What does the Automatic Shredder actually do?

It reduces how often you have to hand-crank the shredder to restore its energy. Squad guides rank it third because it takes one player off crank duty.

How do I make money fast in Shred the Secrets?

Play with a full squad — rewards are not diluted and friends add a bonus — split roles two-and-two between shredders and collectors, rush Shred Amount first, and recycle every paper ball instead of letting them pile up on the floor.
